Chicks


On May thirteenth  the eggs were put in the incubator. We got six eggs and everyone was so excited.We were so surprised on day one of how fast the chicks/embryo has grown. Like how on Day 1 the eyes and blood vessels had formed. Also,on day two the heart forms and begins to beat. On Day 3 the head and tail are distinguishable, it became visible on Day 6.

As the days went on we learned that the scales begin to appear on the legs and bones continues to harden. Also, the wishbone is formed. More development...almost ready on Day 18. On Day 21 two chicks hatched during F.L.E.S. They were so cute! Day 21:three more chicks hatched! They were even more adorable! 

On June 13th we said goodbye to our chicks. We are sad to see them go back to the farm. It's been an AMAZING experience!

-Update- On the Plants

The first plant (from left to right) instead of water, we used soda to "water" it. It did not grow at all. The second one we "watered" it with soapy water. This plant didn't grow either. The next plant was grown in sand, but watered with no special liquids of any kind. This plant also didn't grow. The next plant was grown in the dark, without sunlight, but was watered regularly. This plant grew, but turned white, do you why it turned white? Mold. The next plant was grown without any air at all. This one did not grow either. Finally the last plant, was grown without any special conditions and it still healthy, and alive. Probably we will raffle it off sooner or later. So in conclusion plants in some sort of "bad" conditions like growing in darkness, growing in sand, and growing without air/carbon dioxide can make it not be able to survive and live long, because it needs stuff such as air, and food. Also we did this experiment with bean plants. ~ Matthew and Alexia

Spring Science

     We planted Marigold seeds in Science Lab last Thursday, April 3rd. As we speak, 19/22 students in the class have seeds that have sprouted. Everybody used 5-6 seeds. Each morning our plants are watered and we take turns observing our plants (how many centimeters tall the sprouts are etc.). We record our observations in our Science Journals. 

Here are some facts we learned about plants. 

1) Marigolds come in different colors such as yellow, orange and red.
2) The stem is used as an elevator for transporting water and nutrients. 
3) The leaves make the food by using sunlight, air and water in the process of photosynthesis. 
4) The leaves capture sunlight.
5) The roots absorb water and anchor the plant.

Country Research

In Mrs. Maione's class we have been working on countries. The countries we're working on are China, England, Ireland, and Mexico. We already watched a video about Mexico and China. Students have been divided into 4 groups. Each group has 1 country to research. We also did research in the library with Mrs. Tedesco. Soon, we will be making booklets about our countries. We have been taking notes on index cards in library. Also, we used the computers to watch videos and do more research. We are looking forward to finishing our country projects very soon!


In library we are reading the World Books to do research about our countries. We have been taking notes on index cards. We have been taking notes on food, education, land, recreation and fun facts. In land we have found out many of the countries we are working on, have many major land marks. For food we found out that many foods are also served in U.S.A.. For example, in China they have begun to serve fast food. On index cards, we made bullets and wrote facts that we thought were interesting. We had different index cards for each topic:  food, education, land, recreation and fun facts. We are so thankful to Mrs.Tedesco for making time for us to research!

Array Scavenger Hunt

In class, we learned how to use an array to solve multiplication problems. We went on a scavenger hunt to look around the classroom for different arrays. Some of the arrays we found were: mailboxes, class schedule, the cubbies, and the writer’s notebooks.     

Mrs. Maione’s desk was off-limits so you couldn't  find any arrays even though there were arrays on her desk. 

The scavenger hunt to find arrays all around our classroom was a success and we had a great time! We found a lot of arrays in our classroom!

Silly Science

Science
     In science we learned about matter. Mrs. Oddo taught us about physical and chemical changes. So for a chemical change we made Silly Putty. A chemical change is when you make something but you can not change it back just like we did with the Silly Putty, but after the chemical change you can make a physical change by rolling it into a ball or stretching it. Now we can teach how to make it yourself!

Kindness




 Each Kindness

Mr. Sinanis read us a story called Each Kindness written by Jacqueline Woodson.  This story is about a new girl named Maya that comes to school and tries to make friends. When Chloe, the narrator, is unkind, Maya keeps trying to make friends. When Maya is gone, Chloe is left only with the memory of her unkindness.
